What Makes A Great Surgeon In The patient’s Eyes

What makes a great surgeon in the patient’s eyes
A great surgeon is one that is considered perfect by the patient. No matter what surgeons think about themselves and their skills, it is the patient’s opinion that matters at the end of the day. Surgeons are different from doctors; the thin line between life and death is something that they have to deal with on a daily basis. But patients do not really think of all that when they judge a surgeon. So, what makes a great surgeon according to the patient?
A human with empathy
When patients meet their surgeons for the first time, their first thought is that they are putting their life in the hands of this surgeon. No one wants to let their fate to be decided by a surgeon who looks inarticulate in front of them. Or worst, if surgeons behave and talk in a way that make them look heartless. To patients, their surgeons need to have enough empathy in them, so that they will be able to lie down in peace and let the surgeons do their work.
Not being arrogant and difficult
Some surgeons tend to be arrogant because of their superior skills and are not aware of how they come across to their fellow colleagues and patients. Even though they may have good surgical skills, their patients see them as having no compassion. While it is important for surgeons to know their stuff well, they should also be able to communicate effectively with their patients.
A handler
When patients are putting their lives in the hands of surgeons, they would like to do so with surgeons who are able to handle things perfectly. Things do not always go smoothly in the operation theatre and patients would like to be reassured that their surgeons can handle the extreme chaos that happens in the operation room. Whatever goes down, a surgeon should be able to handle it!
A good track record
A good professional track record goes a long way when it comes to getting new clients. It is the same thing for surgeons and their future patients. Word of mouth and successful previous operations go a long way for surgeons when it comes to how patients view them. After all, greatness comes in the form of praises and a line of impressive work. Of course, being respected by your colleagues is a big deal too for patients.
The job on hand
Like any other job, a good worker is one that knows the insides out of the job well. When patients see that their surgeons know what they are talking about, are confident and have had past successes, they feel safe to put their lives in the hands of these surgeons. When surgeons answer questions from patients with compassion and confidence, patients are relieved that they have found themselves a great surgeon. According to patients, great surgeons are the ones, who know what they are doing and can explain to the patients what they will be doing with humility and empathy.
